Good Yom Kippur

Mostly been keeping track on my new iPod Touch lately.

I guess God thought me fasting but not going to temple was good enough on Friday night when I bought in for $250 at a 1-3 game in the city because my rungood reached new levels. Just constantly flopping the nuts or near-nuts. Made some very questionable pre-flop calls but not once was I all-in as a not huge favorite (most of the time the other guy was drawing dead. It's like once I started being up semi-big I took some chances and they all worked. Called a $20 raise 3 ways with 10-7hh, flopped a flush and stacked a guy for $300. Win another few hundred when I raise with KQ, board runs flop KQ turn K and the guy I'm betting against had AK. Hand when I knew everything was going my way:

I'm in late position with JTo with $1K behind. Bunch of limpers and MP (deeper than I am) makes it $20 (has been doing at a decent number of times, I think just to pick up the blinds). I call planning on making a move on the flop but maniac (just bought in for $1K himself) one before him makes it $180. This guy would never limp with a big pair, or at least I've never seen him do it. I put him on a small pair or 2 random junk cards. Original raiser folds and I call planning on treating my JT like it's AK and get all my money in if I hit a pair (this guy never folds so no point in raising was my thinking at the time. Playing fit or fold in this spot, in hindsight, was probably not the best idea). Flop comes 789. Gin. Check flop and he checks. Turn 6. I bet $235, he jams. I snap call and he had either 56 or 45 (in other words, my read was spot on). Later in the night some guy tries to pull an unbelievable bluff on me (in other words, made zero sense) for $600 so the rich kept getting richer. Game breaks at 6 AM Saturday and I cash out for $4810. I guess that's all it takes to get back in the black. :)

Side note: Recount before you leave, especially in an underground room. Managed to spot a counterfeit $100 bill (it was a bleached $5 that was reprinted as $100, the little paper still said $5 and the watermark was of Lincoln's face instead of Franklin) because it was pink for some reason. Amusing part is I think it would have gotten past most casino's since they usually just put a marker to it to see if's printed on real paper. Either way, I just said it looked odd (didn't noticed the other parts until it was pointed out to me), house took another look at the bill, spotted it as a definite fake and gave me another bill.

Finally

A winning a session where my dumbest/worst call was for $30. Not saying I hit every hand but I had the proper odds to call the hands I lost. Just because my pair and a flush draw didn't improve doesn't mean I was wrong to get ~$250 of my chips in the middle in a 3 way pot. Just because an ace hit the flop doesn't mean it was wrong for me to re-raise to $50 in the SB with QQ. Actually, when 3 people called a $13 initial raise, may be I should have raised more because we ended up with 5 people seeing that flop. Sucked seeing the Q hit the turn though after I folded.

Highlights: Won $20 in Big Duece before I sat down. Hit 2 sets and successfully bluffed flush and hit a nut flush in my first round. Was up $300-400 most of the night. Folded top pair K kicker when I knew it was no good.

Lowlights: 2 big splits and a minor beat.

First chop: LP who just sat down who I never played with before raises to $15. One caller (same situation, just sat down, no read), I call, SB calls. Flop comes QQJ. Check, c-bet of $35, call, I bump it to $100, SB shoves for $270, mutter fold (was told he had KK), fold (was told he had AJ), I call. Turn J river blank. SB has Q9o and we chop.

Second chop: I'm in SB and UTG straddles for $6.  7 limpers before me and I again see AQo and pump it to $66. BB calls, UTG jams for $12 more. Folds around to me (call) and BB tries to stick in the rest of his chips there (I think like $70 or so) but is told ha can't. Flop comes AT5. I check knowing BB will jam, he does, I call. Turn 5, river 5. I chop again with BB who had A9.

Beat: Pick up AJo UTG. Call. 3 callers and BB who has been tilting and card dead jams for $66 total. I know I'm ahead of a good chunk of his range and flipping with another decent amount so I call, everybody else folds. Qc9c hits his flush. Oh well.

Progress

Lost a little money but feel like I'm playing better. First I lost my first $200 getting it all in with 4h5h on a Jh8h3c board being the aggressor. I don't mind my move and it almost worked. Got it back plus some on a gut shot straight where I knew my overcards were good as outs and then overbet the river and a set vs overpair situation. Also won a couple of other decent pots with good hands, donated $15 with 2 pair against a guy I knew had better and $105 with trips, K kicker against somebody I knew likely had at least a straight to make the shove that he did (he had a boat). Also donated another $65 when I tried to bluff somebody with the nickname of "hero call." Would have still ended the night with profit if my pocket aces didn't get cracked by the same dude going on tilt. He had shoved the previous 3-4 hands preflop and did the same here. Unfortunately, his QJ became 2 pair so instead of a ~$200 profit, my day was relatively break even. If I ever plug my leaks, this game is insanely profitable.

EV? FU

First, I had another losing on Monday that I don't even want to talk about. Just a bad call, a bad fold, a bad raise, a bad call, etc. On to last night back at Bleeker.

Bought in for $200. It was down to $155 and I had an aggro on my right that straddled for $4. I pick up pocket 3s and call. 3 other calls. Straddle raises to $20 more. I know he has a decent hand but will raise light. I call. Flop 882. He bets $30, I call. Turn 7. He bets $75, I think for a little and jam. He thinks for a decent amount and then calls with JJ. Well, at least I have decent respect for him to not snap call.

Rebuy for $300. Don't remember what happened specifically (a number of speculative hands, I know) but I got down to $150 another player at the table convinced me to reload (game was playing super deep). So another $200 went in. I hit a pair and a nut flush draw, bet it all the way when my flush hit the turn and built my stack up to $600. After another draw that didn't get there, I was down to $550 when this hand came up.

I limp in at UTG+1 with 78dd. Late position raises to $15. SB reraises to $45. I know both do this really light (more on this at end of hand). UTG calls and I decide to call. Late position goes all in for $200 more. SB calls so I know at least he doesn't have a monster pair. UTG folds and I decide with $580 in the pot that I have the right odds to call. Flop comes TJQ rainbow. Crap. Check, check. Turn 9d giving me the diamond draw. SB (who only bets when he has something and will call anything once he does) bets $200. I have the implied odds so I call. River blank. SB shoves for my last $100, I fold. He had KQo. Late position said he had AJcc. Buy in another $100 on top and get coolered (999 < 99JJJ).

Edit: Forgot I won $5 in Big Deuce before the game started

New casino, same poker

Went to the Sands for the first time. I liked the location of the poker room (right in the middle of everything) but probably won't be heading back any time soon. Between a min of $15 for BJ (there goes friends being able to play for an extended period of time), terrible comps (I think I played 5 hours and got $2 in comp), expensive food ($8 for a cheese steak, ok. $5 to make it a combo? Give me a break.) and nothing else going on in the area, there just isn't enough selling points.

Bought in for $200 (and 2 extra $100 chips pocketed) and sat down at $3/6 limit while I was waiting for a NL table to open up. Dropped $20-25 there when my 2 pair lost to a set. On to $1/2.

Picked up pocket 8s in the BB. Button raises to $22 when only one person called before him. Felt like a raise that didn't want a caller. I called, everybody else folded. Flop came K high. I decided to shove repping the AK hoping he had tens or jacks. He had kings and flopped top set. Oops. Guess I'll be reloading quicker than I expected.

Picked up pocket 8s in late position again and got 3 of callers. Flop came K high again, this time with 2 hearts. Checked to me, I bet $40. 2 callers. River Ah. Checks around, I check. River comes a blank. Checks around. I bet $70 and get called down by K6. Guess I won't be bluffing from here on in. Reload for another $200.

A round or so later, the button raises to $15. I see AdKh in the small blind. I call and there were 3 other callers. Flop comes ace high, all hearts. I bet $50, folds around to button who jams for another hundred or so. I call, he had 4h6h. Turn K, river Qh. Nice. A bit later I'm in mid position and he raises to $15 as the first one to act. I see AA. Smooth call and 2 other callers. Crap. Flop comes 58T. He bets $35, I call, other guys fold. Turn 7. Same bet, I go all in for $80 or so more, he calls and he has KK. River is no help and I'm now back to $550 or so. Yep, back to close to even due to 2 coolers, poker is a skill game.

Now that I had a stack, I finally was able to start making some moves. Don't remember any specific hands but I did end the day with $695.

I'm Famous!

Not really but I thought I got the best Q&A out of November 9er Matt Giannetti today on his ESPN chat.

Andrew (New York)

What's the first thing that went through your head when you saw Hewitt call 3/4 of his stack with KQ?

Matt Giannetti

Are those two queens?

Listen to yourself more often

Sometimes I have to remind myself things I already know. Not in priority order:

#1) If you give yourself a goal, stick to it.
#2) Stop putting yourself in marginal spots.

Back to the Village. Get there at 7 for the start of the Yankee game. At the 6th inning, I tell myself that if the game ends before I sit down, I'm leaving. Game gets tied, goes into 9th. Top of the 9th the Angels score 2 runs. At the bottom of the 9th, one guy goes to get up and the next guy waiting who I told my deal to convinces him to stay til the end of the inning. Yankees can't score and I give up that seat. As I'm going to get my stuff, somebody else said they're getting up. I should have left anyway. Instead I sat down and just buy in for $500.

Take a minor pot or 2 and now I'm in the small blind. Raise to $12, 5 limpers and I have 3h5h. I call. Flop comes 8h9hTh. I bet $40, MP raises to $100, everybody folds. He has only $75 behind or so and I go all in. He calls with the bare 7h. Hits his flush and I'm already down to $300 and change. I get the button. Raised to $12 and 1 caller. I see JhTh and raise to $35. Call, call. Flop comes Kd8d7c. Original raiser bets $75, next guy calls, I fold. J hits turn and AK loses to 9To.

A round later I'm in the SB. After the limpfest, BB (standard tight player) raises to $23. Button calls, I call with 33. Flop comes 7c8c9c. Checks around so I know BB doesn't have JT or a flush and wouldn't raise pre with any pair or connector that just hit the board. Turn 7d. I bet $75 (close to a pot size bet). BB calls, button folds. I put him on either a big pair or Ac. My pocket pair may be good and there's a lot of scare cards I plan on bluff jamming with. River comes 8h. I don't see him as the type to fold a big pair so I give up and check. He checks his AcKh. Damn, could have bluffed that but lost my balls.

Final hand of the night I have TT in the cutoff with a stack of $165. Raise to $15 and get 3 callers including the button. Flop comes 8cJc4d. Checks to me, I bet $40 (too much?). Button calls, everybody else folds. Turn blank. I jam for $110 figuring to charge all draws and possibly get a weak jack to fold. He calls with QJo. River 7c. GG.
